Life at Duke/Finances

All SBSI scholars will live in the newest residence hall on the West Campus of Duke University.  Two scholars will be assigned to a room in the residence hall. There are community bath facilities. The residence hall is air-conditioned and features computer clusters, kitchens, laundry facilities, common areas, and television.

The cost of meals is covered by the program. Breakfast and dinner will be served daily in The Commons in the Brodhead Center, a short walk from the residence hall. Scholars can eat lunch in the campus eatery of their choice.

All scholars are required to provide proof of insurance and vaccinations.  The Institute does not provide health insurance, but the student health fee is paid by the program.  Student Health provides care for acute needs (colds/flu, minor injuries, allergy shots, prescriptions, etc.).  Emergency services and hospitalization are not part of this service.

Each SBSI scholar receives a stipend of $600.00 that will be disbursed in two parts.  The first disbursement of $250.00 will be made on June 30. The balance will be mailed August 30, upon successful completion of the program. Bring a small amount of money for personal expenses (toiletries, laundry, non-program travel, or events).
